  • Individual Intake and Assessment Session for children’s matters and/or property settlement.

A Family Dispute Resolution (FDR) intake session is an initial meeting between a mediator and parties involved in a family dispute, typically occurring before formal mediation begins. During this session, the mediator explains the mediation process, assesses whether the case is suitable for FDR, and gathers essential information about the conflict.

The intake typically covers the nature of the dispute, identifies the key issues to be resolved, and screens for any safety concerns such as family violence or power imbalances that might make mediation inappropriate. The mediator outlines the principles of confidentiality, voluntary participation, and impartiality, while also discussing the costs, timeframes, and what participants can expect.

This session allows each party to ask questions, understand their rights and responsibilities, and determine whether they're comfortable proceeding with mediation. The mediator also assesses each person's capacity to participate meaningfully and ensures both parties are entering the process willingly. If FDR is deemed suitable, the mediator will schedule formal mediation sessions and may provide information about preparing for them. If mediation isn't appropriate, the mediator can issue a certificate allowing parties to proceed to court or suggest alternative dispute resolution pathways.
